BB King Biography |
B.B. King has been awarded the title of "King of Blues” over the course of his successful career, in which he perfected the art of performing on the electric guitar. He has been hailed by Rolling Stone Magazine as the Greatest Living Guitarist, behind only the deceased Jimi Hendrix and Duane Allman for the title of Greatest Guitarist of All Time.
King grew up in a family of poor sharecroppers on a plantation and he was working on the fields at the tender age of 7. He found passion in music through the African American church, learning guitar fundamentals from his pastor and eventually turning to mail-order instruction manuals to practice.
During the 1950s, King was an artist on RPM Records and amassed a number of hits early-on in his career, including "On My Work and Honor” and "Sweet Little Angel.” The up-and-coming blues artist really hit the big time with a cover of the Roy Hawkins song "The Thrill is Gone,” which wound up on the top of the pop and R&B charts.
The artist continued his rise in the 70s, releasing hits such as "I Like to Live the Love” and "To Know You is to Love You.” The hits continued, and by 1985 he had released almost 75 singles that made it onto the Billboard Top R&B charts, quite a feat for any performer.
As the years wore on, King has focused more on touring and television appearances and less on recording. Ever the avid live performer, he has been averaging upwards of 300 shows per year. When he does release albums these days, he frequently records with artists that grew up under his influence, such as Eric Clapton.
King celebrated his 80th birthday last year, and he traveled on a massive farewell tour, complete with a number of legendary guest performers. Fortunately for fans around the globe, however, it was not a real farewell tour - he can still be found touring the world with his companion, his guitar Lucille.
