Blue Man Group Biography |
The Blue Man Group has developed a reputation as silent, mysterious blue-faced individuals draped in black clothing. What many people dont know, however, is how exciting silent blue-faced individuals can make a performance. Phil Standon, Chris Wink and Matt Goldman tour the country brining their avant-garde style of performance to their millions of fans. In addition to being mute, the trio rarely shows any form of emotion. They communicate with one another through intense eye contact, even straying away from making gestures.
The shows include intense lighting techniques and innovative instrumental numbers with an emphasis on percussion. There is a lot of audience participation, including some that requires a "poncho” section in the front seat that protects show goers from everything that the artists throw off the stage throughout the show.
The show was developed out of street performances in New York City - the trio created unique events on the streets for people to watch and they eventually developed a name for themselves. In time, they were introduced to the artistic director of a NYC club and they created a full-length show under the same premise of the performance pieces on the street. Their first long-term engagement was at the off-Broadway Astor Place Theatre. As the show has involved, there is often a focus on themes of self-conscience, innocence, technology and information.
While the tribe seems content performing to their bevy of fans, they are also making quite a shift towards the mainstream - when they released "The Complex” in 2003, popular artists such as Gavin Rossdale, Tracy Bonham and Dave Matthews all lent their vocals to the project.
