Sound Tribe Sector 9 Biography |

|
“Bottom line: whether at a downtempo sway or a raging sweat, whether they’re from the suburbs or the city--kids want to dance.” David Murphy, bassist for Sound Tribe Sector Nine, is sure of this one thing. Considering how many different crowds STS9-- which has toured as far as Japan -- has seen since forming in 1997, it’s best to believe him. And it doesn’t hurt that STS9 evolved out of a musically diverse suburban environment, a multi-cultured environment where the members of STS9 were influenced by the numerous sonic strings the band would later weave into their own tonal tapestries.“In the suburbs, there’s no one culture, but every culture,” says Murphy, “so bored kids can end up pulled into anything from the spectrum.”
Originally a trio from the Atlanta, Georgia suburb of Stone Mountain, Murphy, guitarist Hunter Brown and drummer Zach Velmer, friends since childhood, were eventually joined by keyboardist David Phipps and percussionist Jeffree Lerner. The quintet have spent the last five years developing disparate influences as seemingly far flung as goth-industrial to the Grateful Dead into a breakbeat fusion of liquid jazz and funk traditions. Sound Tribe Sector Nine follows in a proud tradition of suburban innovation. Jungle, Ambient, Dub and Drum ‘n’ Bass -- all these elements help color STS9’s electronics-peppered mosaic.
