Tori Amos Biography |

In January 1992, music journalists around the nation were sent a letter from Douglas P. Morris, president, co-chairman and co-CEO of Atlantic Records. The letter, printed on fancily embossed personal stationary, was accompanied by a promotional audiocassette. "For those of us who spend most of our waking moments in this frenetic business of music," wrote Morris, "there are very special moments that remind us why we wanted to do this in the first place. For me, the rarest and most special of these moments is when I hear for the first time an artist whose music embodies passion, integrity, and vision." All of which was well and good as was the accompanying cassette, Little Earthquakes by Tori Amos (b. circa 1964, North Carolina). The only problem: Morris had heard Amos for "the first time" nearly five years earlier.
In short, Atlantic was putting a new face on an old artist. In 1988, the company had issued a peculiar hard rock album by a "band" called Y Kant Tory Read; oddly, the album cover depicted only a sultry redhead holding a sword in typical hard rock/dangerous babe stance. In fact, Y Kant Tory Read was Tori Amos, and the so-called band essentially a studio concoction. As the cover picture indirectly promised, the album was a predictable batch of Pat Benatar-inspired hard rock; though the singer''s voice was much better than average, the lyrics were another story. "Caught my boyfriend/ Lookin'' at another/ Slender pair of thighs," sang the fetching Tory, whose last name mysteriously was mentioned nowhere in the album credits. But Tory not only couldn''t read, she couldn''t sell and the album sunk without a trace.
