The Baltimore Orioles signed OF Jeromy Burnitz to a two-year contract worth six million dollars. It is unknown what exactly his role will be, but it's likely he will move over from his usual right field position to take the vacant spot in left field for the Orioles. Luis Matos or rookie Nick Markakis would play center field and Jay Gibbons would play right field. There is still a possibility that Burnitz would play right field, his original position, if the Orioles decide to move Gibbons to first base. However, that move is highly unlikely. Burnitz was signed last year by the Chicago Cubs after they traded Sammy Sosa to the Orioles. The move has left Orioles fans puzzled with the direction the club is trying to go. The team has not signed some big name free agents because they are scared to pay big money to players who have had injury problems. The team also doesn't want to sign outfielders to big contracts because the organization has several young outfielders who should make their way up through the minor leagues quickly. Now for the puzzling part. The team gave Burnitz a two year deal. He turns 36 at the start of the season. He had very few other offers, and the Orioles should have given him a one-year contract.
