Every once in a while, a musical comes along that steals the thunder of all other shows - this decade, Wicked” is it.
The show, based loosely on Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” by Gregory Maguire, tells the tale of the land of Oz before Dorothy and her house dropped in. The story tells the tale of Elphaba, who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda Upland, who becomes the Good Witch of the North. There is a strong focus on their relationship struggles and opposing views, and their affections for the same man.
The show debuted on Broadway in 2003, directed by Joe Mantello with staging by Wayne Cilento. The show received mixed reviews early on, but quickly became a fan favorite and led to a North American Tour and a number of productions across the globe.
The musical numbers in the show are also very notable - For Good,” No Good Deed” and Popular” are fan favorites.
The original show received accolades across the globe, including ten Tony Award nominations in 2004 and took home awards for Best Actress,” Best Scenic Design” and Best Costume Design.” The show also won six Drama Desk Awards and The West End production was nominated for four Laurence Olivier Awards last year.
The North American tour has played to capacity almost constantly since it began in 2005, grossing over $155 million. Tickets for four-week engagements often sell out in no more than seven hours.
